Transurban doubles profit

from $209 million a year earlier. Group revenue, including from its Melbourne and Sydney roads, surged 20 per cent to $3.29 billion.

Transurban chief executive Scott Charlton said three road projects in Brisbane were progressing well, including the $60 million Inner City Bypass (ICB) upgrade.

Mr Charlton said the company had introduced two new customer apps under its new Linkt brand, launched a new website and made it simpler for motorists to avoid fees.

“We also have worked with our government departments to change legislation, which now bundles customer notices of demand and reduces administration fees,” Mr Charlton said.

Peak motorist body RACQ said that despite Transurban’s rising profit, its inner-city toll roads, including the Go Between Bridge and Clem7 were not performing well.

RACQ chief communication officer Paul Turner said while traffic volumes on major roads, such as Gateway and Logan, were strong, Clem7, Legacy Way and Go Between Bridge were being underused.

“Toll roads are like any other product in that if consumers do not see value in them, they will not buy them,” Mr Turner said. “Motorists are using the free alternatives like the Story Bridge and Milton Rd, which is putting more pressure on traffic congestion.”

Transurban shares closed up 1 per cent to $12.02 yesterday.
