and tourist opportunity.

“My attitude is, it’s a great location. Tugun, on the other hand, you know what, let’s keep it for the surfers. Let them enjoy the surfing part of it.

“There’s not a lot of people surfing on the northern part of The Spit.”

Gecko Environmental Council, part of the Save our Southern Beaches movement, rejected the Tugun proposal as a “groundhog day” move.

“I think it is just flying a kite, myself,” Gecko Environmental Council campaign co-ordinator Lois Levy said. “If they are really interested in that plan at all they would have something more concrete.

“It seems to me it has been proposed because they are trying to cash in on Queensland Government’s support for a tourism hub.”

Ms Levy said the group had been pushing against similar proposals since 2003.

“It is a massive development and will take up a huge amount of space with unknown impact on the neighbourhood. It would change the complete profile of the area.

“I don’t think it or The Spit proposal is very likely, or feasible for the Gold Coast.”
