Coolangatt­a to join on to high-speed internet

HIGH-SPEED internet is headed to Coolangatt­a with council mapping out future fibre optic cable routes.

Mayor Tom Tate yesterday announced the city’s new Wi-Fi hot spots.

The council has previously installed the optic fibre cable before the tram tracks from Helensvale through to Broadbeach were constructe­d.

Coolangatt­a recently joined Southport, Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach in offering fast, free internet service.

Cr Tate said the new hot spots would include Burleigh, Miami and the Nobby foreshore.

“This is supercharg­ing an already incredible optic fibre network, the best in Australia by far,” Cr Tate said. “This will result in a 37km loop being added, taking in Broadbeach, Burleigh, Varsity Lakes and Robina. When finished, the network will be 100 times faster than what exists today.”

The cable will extend south to Coolangatt­a, clipping on an existing cable along the Gold Coast Hwy and west to Robina.

Council and the State Government are preparing a business case on extending the tram from Broadbeach to Burleigh with the next stage connecting with the airport. EXPERTS say no koalas were harmed during the developmen­t of the $22 million block of land where the Colgate-Palmolive factory previously lay.

During the clearing of the 22ha Arundel lot, some locals voiced concerns to the Bulletin that electronic signs installed on Captain Cook Dve was a result of koalas being disrupted.

A council spokesman said this was not true and that there were around a dozen placed in different areas on the Gold Coast due to breeding season.
