Terrified woman hurt after allegedly being rammed by ‘hoon’
A 19-YEAR-OLD has been charged with ramming a car and breaking a terrified woman’s back as she tried to reach the Mudgeeraba Police Station for help. Yesterday, police arrested the teenage woman at her workplace, alleging she was a member of the Mexican Hoon Cartel and had been driving one of two cars that chased the driver after she saw hoons driving recklessly.
A TERRIFIED woman’s back was broken when her car was allegedly rammed by a vehicle that pursued her as she tried to reach the Mudgeeraba Police Station for help, say police.
Officers arrested a 19year-old woman at her workplace yesterday, alleging she was a member of the socalled Mexican Hoon Cartel and had been driving one of two cars that chased the driver after she’d witnessed hoons driving recklessly at Mudgeeraba and wanted to report them.
Police charged the 19year-old with grievous bodily harm (GBH), stalking, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and a raft of other traffic offences.
Senior Sergeant Mat Kelly of the Gold Coast Rapid Action Patrol said that as the woman tried to reach police, she made a wrong turn into a Caltex service station instead of the police station. The incident occurred late at night on January 1.
It was there that her car was rammed from behind, injuring her back. The Bulletin understands she is in a wheelchair, but it is not clear if that is permanent.
He said the woman was followed by two cars driven by a woman and a man.
“She’s driven into a Caltex service station, she accidentally went too short, she was trying to get to the Mudgeeraba Police Station,’’ Sen-Sgt Kelly said. “She has stopped her car before she moves out on to the slip road, beside the police station.
“We will allege this girl has rammed her up the backside with her car and then she has got out and abused this lady.”
He said the woman managed to flee the crash scene but suffered serious injuries.
“She managed to drive away but as a result of that accident has sustained injuries and that’s where the GBH charge comes in,” he said.
“The stalking is a concerning act, it frightened this woman and there is the dangerous operation, because if she pushed her car out on to that slip road, she could have been killed.
“We will also allege this woman had her car damaged out the front of her house by the group.”
The arrest came as police crack down on the group, which is alleged to have been terrrorising Gold Coast suburbs for months with reckless driving, which members have been filming and uploading to social media.
Police also arrested a 23year-old man yesterday morning at his Robina home, where officers seized tyres they will allege were stolen.
The man was charged with possessing drug implements, failing to abide by a court order which related to not giving police the pass code to his phone, and possessing property thought to be stolen.
Officers swooped on homes at Gilston on Tuesday, arresting two men. One of them was alleged to have stolen upwards of 60 tyres from a local Bob Jane T Mart. Another man was allegedly in possession illegally of more than a dozen knives.
In raids, police seized computers, tablets and phones and are searching data to identify other members of the group.
Fed-up residents have lashed out at the group, saying the community is “very angry” with hooning that has frightened locals to the point that when approached by the Bulletin, they would only comment if they remained unnamed, fearing reprisals.
Sen-Sgt Kelly said police would continue to pursue the cartel and members involved in any criminal activity.
“At the end of the day, we will pull out all stops to ensure they are charged and put before the courts in relation to any criminal activity they’re involved in,’’ he said.
“This is what the community expects and what we are going to do.”
The woman and man arrested and charged yesterday are due to face Southport Magistrates Court on August 29.
