Indoor singles titles on line

THE Australian Indoor Singles began yesterday at the Tweed Heads Bowls Club and will conclude with finals on Thursday.

Gold Coasters Chloe Stewart, Jessica Srisamruay­bai, John Bain, Paul Staggard and Ryan Bester all survived their first round in straight sets and will continue today in Round 2.

Men’s defending champion David Ferguson (NSW), who is playing pennant for Broadbeach this season, has been bundled out first round by Pete Bonsor (NSW).

Women’s champion Rebecca Van Asch (Tasmania) survived a first-round scare to scrape home in a tie-breaker over Christine Keep (NSW).

THE prestigiou­s Gold Coast Tweed District Ladies Division 1 Pennant Season finished in spectacula­r fashion on Friday with two powerhouse clubs of Helensvale and Broadbeach doing battle in an almighty grand final at Robina.

There were Australian and Queensland players scattered through each side, ensuring the large and enthusiast­ic crowd would enjoy the highest quality of encounters to be seen all season.

Hawks skips Lynsey Clarke, Kelsey Cottrell and Georgia White took on Bulls skips Dee Robertson, Julie Keegan and Bolivia Millerick respective­ly.

In a quality contest, the Hawks won by nine shots to reclaim the flag and title after last securing it in 2014.

“I’m so proud of our awesome team and achievemen­ts this year, definitely a win I’ll cherish for a while,” Clarke said.

THE grand final of the inaugural Ladies Goldie Sevens Saturday morning competitio­n was won by the Lucky Sevens.

The men’s pennant finals will be this weekend at the following venues: Helensvale (Divisions 1, 3, 8), Beenleigh (2, 5), Musgrave Hill (4, 6, 7) and Southport (9, 10, 11).

Helensvale finished on top of Division 1 and will play Broadbeach with the prize of a grand final berth on offer.

The loser will play the winner out of Tweed Heads and South Tweed who finished third and fourth. Preliminar­y games will be held on Saturday with grand finals on Sunday.

THE Gold Coast Tweed dominated the men’s Zone 1 Champion of Club Champions and District Mixed Pairs play offs against the Gateway District last Sunday.

All teams won through to the state finals at Club Helensvale in October including Eric Johannes (singles), Aron Sherriff and I (pairs), Matthew Lucas, Sam White, Mark Casey and Sherriff (fours) and DeeAnn Robertson and Sean Ingham (mixed pairs).
