Ryan’s quickly making his mark
VICTORIAN Ryan Maloney is enjoying his time in the Gold Coast sun but he’s quick to point out he’s not here for a holiday.
Maloney has swept to the joint lead with three-times champion Jeff Lloyd in the Queensland metropolitan jockeys premiership on 11 winners.
“Things are going well and I just have to work hard to make certain they continue,” the 33year-old Maloney said.
After a four-month suspension in Victoria, Maloney moved to the Gold Coast for a new start to take up a position with the Toby Edmonds stable and has quickly got the backing of other trainers.
He rode a treble at the Sunshine Coast metropolitan meeting on Saturday – From Within and Deer Mountain for Edmonds and Tawfiq Boy for Newcastle trainer Kris Lees, who is keen to use him as often as possible.
Lees’ Queensland representative Mel Eggleston said Maloney had been rewarded with several rides including Tawfiq Boy after winning on Dal Cielo at the Gold Coast.
“Ryan is going well and trainers like to stick with an inform rider,” he said. “It was a nice ride from him on Tawfiq Boy to get through and win and the horse is on the up.”
Maloney has taken over from the soon-to-retire Lloyd as the main rider for the Edmonds stable.
He has already ridden eight
winners from 14 rides for the powerful Gold Coast yard this season.
“Ryan is certainly riding well,” stable foreman Trent Edmonds said.
The Edmonds stable has Whypeeo (Group 3 The Heath, 1100m), Granny Red Shoes (Group 3 McNeil Stakes, 1200m) and Sylpheed (Group 3 Cockram Stakes, 1200m ) entered for the Caulfield meeting in Melbourne on Saturday.
Whypeeo, who is resuming from a spell, is among 17 entries for The Heath.
Other entries include multiple Group 1-winning sprinter Santa Ana Lane and Futurity Stakes winner Brave Smash.
