No bail for knife accused

-

A MAGISTRATE has mentioned “oddities” in statutory declarations before refusing bail to a man accused of assaulting his partner with a knife.

The Chinese national, who cannot be named for legal reasons, made an application for bail in the Southport Magistrates Court yesterday after being charged with assault occasioning bodily harm on August 18. Police allege the man, who arrived in Australia last month, threw a drinking glass at the woman and held a knife to the woman’s stomach.

Magistrate Brian Kucks said the application for bail was supported by three statutory declarations, two which had almost identical or very similar paragraphs. The matter was adjourned to September 7.
