Cooly alive as Bond bid falters

-

COOLANGATTA Tweed have booked their place in the QFA division two grand final while Bond University have been bundled in straight sets.

Coolangatta Tweed overcame a 12-point halftime deficit to eliminate Bond and keep their premiership hopes alive with an 11.16 (82) to 10.12 (72) win on Saturday.

The southern Gold Coast side will play minor premiers Park Ridge in the preliminary final next weekend. The winner plays Beenleigh in the grand final.

“We played catch-up for most of the day,” player-coach Matt Walder said.

“We had to overcome them in the last quarter. she was a tug of war all the way through.

“They held more advantages through the game but we just finished stronger.

“The boys have stood up for weeks now, knowing we have been playing for our lives.

“It was the same again (on Saturday). We came to that last quarter we were facing a deficit but we found a way and willed ourselves to a win. It was super character from everyone in the group.

Walder was charged with striking in the third quarter but said he would contest the charge and was confident of playing against Park Ridge.

“I have got to go to the tribunal,” Walder said.

“I don’t believe it warrants a week suspension.”
