Club still ‘shocked’ at national triumph

- RHYS O'NEILL

THE celebration was more tired flop than textbook flip, but Gold Coast’s latest national gymnastics champions are now energised for 2019.

Ashmore’s Super Performance Centre at the weekend defied a string of narrow losses in recent years to finally claim overall honours in the men’s artistic division at the National Clubs Carnival.

The 38-strong squad held off defending champions Manly Warringah and the best teams from across Australia at the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre to spark wild celebrations – well, sort of.

“Because we stayed in camp we were pretty tired and didn’t celebrate too much,” head men’s coach and manager Brett Wood said.

“But afterwards we had a hit at Top Golf, which was great.”

After seven years of service at the club, during which there have been several close calls, Wood said his squad lapped up the victory.

“Every year we have completed and managed some podium places, but this year was unexpected,” he said.

“We didn’t think it was possible, but we came away on top. Well and truly this is the biggest (win we have had).

“We have a good team of coaches and kids who are very dedicated.”

Focus now turns to 2019 and building on perfection.

“From a club point of view this is a pinnacle,” Wood said.

“Next year we’ll just plan to improve again and learn more skills. We’re still shocked.”
