Tweed police weed out cannabis producers during operation

- AMANDA ROBBEMOND

TWEED police have hauled in more than 300 cannabis plants and 20kg cannabis leaf in two raids across northern NSW.

The raids are part of their Cannabis Eradication Operation.

On February 7, PolAir were conducting aerial patrols over the Hopkins Creek area, just south of Numinbah, where they observed a large number of cannabis plants at a property.

Police visited the property and spoke to a 60-year-old man, who allegedly led police to a large crop of cannabis plants. Police allegedly seized 257 plants from the address, with some plants more than two metres tall. The plants are estimated to be worth more than $500,000.

The man was charged with cultivating prohibited plants of a commercial quantity and was bail refused, appearing at Byron Bay Local Court on February 8.

Meanwhile, PolAir allegedly spotted another cannabis crop at Tyalgum on the same day around 11am.

Police from the TweedByron police district visited the location, where a 46-year-old man allowed access. Police allegedly seized 46 cannabis plants and 20kg cannabis leaf.
