New brewery plans on being smash hit

- ANDREW POTTS

THE Gold Coast’s newest brewery and restaurant will be built inside a former smash repair shop on the looming third stage of the light rail extension.

Plans have been filed with the Gold Coast City Council to redevelop the property on Miami’s Christine Ave to create the new dining location, known as Bandwagon.

Put forward by applicant Unnamed Venue Pty Ltd, the 911sq m building would be gutted and completely refitted to create the new nightspot.

Located just a short distance from the future route of the $660 million Gold Coast light rail’s stage 3A, Bandwagon is the latest in a series of new venues proposed for sites near the public transport corridor.

City planning boss Cr Cameron Caldwell said the tram system had inspired several new eateries on or near the Gold Coast Hwy.

“The extension of the light rail gives opportunity for renewal and to expand our famous Gold Coast lifestyle offerings,” he said.

“We are continuing to see new restaurants and funky bars popping up to service the Coast’s residents.

“This renewal can have a positive impact across the community,” Cr Caldwell said.

According to planning documents filed with the council late last week, the restaurant will boast a pizza oven, bar lounge seating area and walkway. Brewery tours will be held, starting in the restaurant before moving to a safety briefing area and tasting beers in the restaurant

The brewery will operate during day business hours Monday to Friday while the restaurant will be open at nights Wednesday to Friday. It will open from noon until midnight on weekends.

A growing number of development applications have been made in the past year for nightspots along the future tram route.

In October last year the Bulletin revealed one of the Gold Coast’s most famous surf shops would be transformed into a giant bar and restaurant under new plans.

The owners of the Local Knowledge surf shop building want to turn the Nobby Beach site into a 1005sq m food and dining venue for up to 200 people.
