Sex changes costs De­fence $1m

TAX­PAY­ERS have been slugged more than $1 mil­lion for Aus­tralian De­fence Force per­son­nel to un­dergo sex change surgery and for treat­ment of gen­der dys­pho­ria. Seven­teen had surgery – 10 be­ing male-to-fe­male re­as­sign­ments – from Novem­ber 2012 to March 2016, The Aus­tralian re­ports. The $1 mil­lion did not in­clude drugs dis­pensed by the ADF, ac­cord­ing to Free­dom of In­for­ma­tion doc­u­ments. Twenty-seven ADF mem­bers re­ceived treat­ment for gen­der dys­pho­ria – the dis­tress a per­son feels be­cause of a mis­match be­tween their sex and their gen­der at birth.
