1838 - The per­pe­tra­tors of the Myall Creek Mas­sacre in New South Wales are ac­quit­ted.

1889 - Brazil’s monar­chy was over­thrown.

1902 - An­ar­chist Gen­naro Ru­bin failed in his at­tempt to mur­der King Leopold II of Bel­gium.

1920 - The League of Na­tions met for the first time in Geneva, Switzer­land.

1940 - Dur­ing the Blitz, the Ger­man air-force bombs the city of Coven­try, al­most com­pletely de­stroy­ing it.

1965 - The Soviet probe, Ven­era 3, was launched from Baikonur, Kaza­khstan. On March 1, 1966, it be­came the first un­manned space­craft to reach the sur­face of an­other planet when it crashed on Venus.

1985 - Bri­tain and Ire­land signed an ac­cord giv­ing Dublin an of­fi­cial con­sul­ta­tive role in gov­ern­ing North­ern Ire­land.

1988 - The Pales­tine Na­tional Coun­cil, the leg­isla­tive body of the PLO, pro­claimed the es­tab­lish­ment of an in­de­pen­dent Pales­tinian state at the close of a four-day con­fer­ence in Algiers.

2005 - In Amiens, France, Is­abelle Di­noire be­came the first per­son to un­dergo a par­tial face trans­plant. She had been at­tacked by a dog ear­lier in the year.
