The Gympie Times - - REGIONAL NEWS -

THE north-south runway at Sunshine Coast Airport would no longer exist in its current form Sunshine Coast Council has finally admitted after month’s of speculation about its future.

In a statement from a “spokesperson” the council has acknowledged Mayor Mark Jamieson and Councillors Dwyer and Robinson (as members of the Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion Project Control Group) were “informed at a meeting on the afternoon of Friday, October 26, 2018 that the southern end of the existing runway would be re-purposed as a taxi way”.

That information was not relayed to the Sunshine Coast Regional Airport Tenants Association despite it having sought answers for several months about the runway’s fate.

“The new runway will be longer and wider than the existing runway, offering a superior operating environment for general aviation than the existing runway,” the council spokesman said.

“This includes less susceptibility for lighter aircraft to the impacts of cross winds.
