Cinemas

The Insider's Guide to New Zealand - - NORTH ISLAND -

Everyone needs a break from the beach. If you want to spend a couple of hours indoors, Matakana Cinemas is the place. Built in 2007, the venue is the past winner of NZ’s Best Indie Cinema. The range of films is substantial, from the Metropolitan Opera to the latest fluffy Disney offering, as well as theatre performances and classic New Zealand and foreign films. Grab a gelato or glass of wine and get in early to snag one of the recliners at the front of the cinema (no sore necks here). The décor may distract from the screens; in the Paradiso room, guests sit under a cloud of roses - there are 32,000 on the roof – while the Chandelier room has what is reputed to be the largest chandelier in the southern hemisphere.
