Race Day, Kurow, 30 De­cem­ber 2015

The whole val­ley turns out for this an­nual Gal­lop South event with about 120 horses, an eight-race card and an oc­ca­sion for hol­i­day­mak­ers to join the lo­cals. Habitués hire small mar­quees and sit in the shade en­joy­ing live mu­sic and fash­ion in the field and putting a lit­tle some­thing on the tote.

The Kurow Fes­ti­val, Main Street, 16 Jan­uary. This 22-year-old event has a full cal­en­dar in­clud­ing a street mar­ket with 60 stalls from all over the lower South Is­land, a fish­ing con­test and a bridge tour­na­ment (and there are those who line up year af­ter year to play). Main Street, The Trust Ao­raki Aviemore Clas­sic, Labour week­end. For more than 25 years, this trailer yacht re­gatta has blown in boat­ies from all over New Zealand. The Aviemore Clas­sic run is the largest freshwater yacht event in the coun­try – don’t miss it on the Sun­day.
