Driv­ing around Blenheim is slightly sur­real. Every few hun­dred me­tres a sign pro­claims yet an­other well-known wine la­bel. It feels as though Glen­garry Wines has come to life. Nes­tled be­tween the giants are the smaller bou­tique winer­ies, im­por­tant gems in a large crown.

New Zealand’s wine comes from Marl­bor­ough, and 85 per cent of that is sau­vi­gnon blanc. Not bad con­sid­er­ing the first grapes weren’t planted un­til 1973. It’s easy to feel over­whelmed when faced with the mon­u­men­tal task of vis­it­ing as many cel­lar doors as pos­si­ble. But fear not, we have sev­eral op­tions to help you make the most of the area.
