The Insider's Guide to New Zealand - - SOUTH ISLAND -

They say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure or, in this case, a town’s old rubbish heap is a community’s new project. It’s hard to believe but Kurow Island was indeed the town dump but now, thanks to the Kurow

Town Enhancement Group, the island is thriving both with new growth and visitors. With walking tracks, picnic spots, sports fields and bike trails, it’s a perfect place to spend a quiet couple of hours enjoying the twists of the braided river surroundings. Note: take care when searching Kurow Island on the internet as that is also the name of an island in a popular game called Minecraft – somewhat confusing.

To get there, cross the first bridge leading to the Hakataramea Valley and walk onto Kurow Island.
