Stranded colour­work gloves

SOFT, WARM and colour­ful, th­ese gloves will be en­ter­tain­ing to knit. They fea­ture a stranded colour­work pat­tern in­spired by Scan­di­na­vian forests, and Lat­vian braids around the wrists worked in the same colours. The cuffs have a pi­cot edg­ing and folded hem for a neat fin­ish. Caro­line Bir­kett’s de­sign is knit­ted in Wens­ley­dale Gems, a pure wool from West York­shire Spin­ners that comes in 20 lus­trous, jewel-like colours.

GLOVE (work both the same) CUFF

Us­ing 3.25mm DPNs and yarn A, cast on 48 sts. Pm and join to work in the round, be­ing care­ful not to twist sts. Work 3 rounds in st st (K ev­ery round). Next round: (Yo, K2­tog) to end of round. Work 4 rounds in st st. Next round: Fold up hemmed edge to the WS of the piece and knit ev­ery st to­gether with the cor­re­spond­ing stitch in the cast-on round. Work 3 rounds in st st.

LAT­VIAN BRAID

Set-up round: (K1 in yarn B, K1 in yarn C) to end. Next round: With both yarns in front, *P1 in yarn B, bring yarn C un­der­neath yarn B, twist­ing them and P1 in yarn C. Bring yarn B un­der­neath yarn C up, twist­ing them; rep from * to end. Next round: *P1 yarn B, bring yarn C over yarn B, twist­ing them, P1 in yarn B, bring yarn C over yarn B, twist­ing them; rep from * to end. In yarn A, work 4 rounds in st st. On the fi­nal round place a marker be­fore and af­ter stitch 25.

HAND

Change to 4mm nee­dles. Us­ing yarns B and C, work Rounds 1 to 27 of Chart, in­creas­ing for thumb in rounds 7-23 as in­di­cated. 66 sts. Round 28: Work to mrk, re­move mrk, place next 19 sts onto a holder, work to end. 47 sts. Round 29: Work to sts on holder, cast on 1 st in yarn B us­ing the back­wards loop method, work to end. 48 sts. Con­tinue work­ing from Chart to end of Round 31.

LIT­TLE FIN­GER

Change to 3.25mm nee­dles. Us­ing yarn B only, cont as foll: Next round: K6, put 36 sts on stitch holder, cast on 1 st over gap us­ing the back­wards loop method, re­join, K5. 12 sts. Ar­range evenly on DPNs. Knit un­til fin­ger length is 6cm or length to fit hand. De­crease round: K2­tog to end. 6 sts. Break yarn and thread through rem sts.

UP­PER HAND

Change to 4mm nee­dles. Place 37 held sts onto nee­dles. Join by pick­ing up and knit­ting 3 st along cast-on edge of lit­tle fin­ger in yarn C. 40 sts. Work 4 rounds as set by last 4 rows of Chart, then work 1 round in yarn B.

RING FIN­GER

Change to 3.25mm nee­dles. Place first 7 sts and last 7 sts of round on dpns. Place re­main­ing 26 sts on a holder. Us­ing yarn B only, cont as foll: Next round: K7 to gap, cast on 2 sts over gap us­ing the back­wards loop method, K7. 16 sts. Ar­range evenly on DPNs. Knit un­til fin­ger length is ap­prox. 7cm. De­crease round: K2­tog to end. 8 sts. Break yarn and thread through rem sts.
