Let’s all help to recycle in CQ

The Morning Bulletin - - LIFE -

LET’S all help to reduce, re-use and recycle during National Recycling Week 2017.

As Australia’s population and waste levels continue to rise, recycling matters now more than ever.

This year Planet Ark’s National Recycling Week (November 13-19) highlights why recycling is only part of the battle.

Residents and businesses in Livingstone Shire can help win the War on Waste and close the recycling loop by purchasing products that contain recycled content.

In the 20 years to 2015, Australia’s population increased by 28% and waste levels grew by 170%. The good news is that recycling is growing at an even faster rate than waste. What happens to those materials once they have been recycled and how everyone plays a part in the process is a key focus of this year’s National Recycling Week campaign.

Councillor for waste management Adam Belot said it was only recently he and the council’s Supervisor of Waste Collection and Disposal Leanne Randall attended St Ursula’s College to discuss with students better ways of recycling, especially touching on reducing waste initiatives.

“We as consumers need to be mindful of what ends up in our landfill,” Cr Belot said.

“Leanne and I thoroughly enjoyed speaking to the students about this important issue, and we are available to speak at any other schools for similar presentations.”

Cr Belot said the Livingstone Shire has just over 14,000 households and on average, each household generates almost a tonne and a half of waste each year – of which about 17 per cent is recyclable.

“Council's vision is to guide the shire in the continual improvement of its waste management practices through innovation, education and promotion of reducing, reusing and recycling of waste streams as the key priorities,” Cr Belot said.
