CELEBRATES 120 YEARS OF SERVICE.
From humble beginnings in 1897, JA McGregor & Co was established in Warialda NSW as a stock & station agency. Over the years that followed the business expanded into machinery, grain trading, farm merchandise, cropping inputs and agronomic services, with the team expanding greatly as a result. In 1987 J.A. McGregor & Co. was looking to expand westwards, and so with a group of experienced local partners formed McGregor Gourlay Agricultural Services based in Moree NSW. Since then, the business has continued to expand to become one of the most dynamic, privately owned rural service companies in Australia, employing over 120 staff across 13 branches located across North West NSW, the NSW Northern Rivers, and the South West QLD Border Regions.
The business today offers a highly customer focused approach and specialises in the areas of chemicals, fertiliser, seed, agronomy services, rural merchandise, animal health, property and water equipment. The associated business of JA McGregor Livestock & Property also offers customers a full range of livestock and real estate agency services. With branches located across the premier cotton, broadacre, sugar cane, horticulture and livestock regions of NSW and South West QLD, McGregor Gourlay is at the forefront of agriculture, helping their customers pioneer production in new areas across the region and assisting them to achieve maximum crop potential by pushing new boundaries in precision technologies.
With a dedicated Agronomy team, there is an outstanding level of experience across a wide range of cropping environments which provide growers a practical, personalised approach to crop rotation planning that combines financial and agronomic objectives with the longterm goals of the individual farmer.
McGregor Gourlay is leading the way in applied digital technology through the launch of their Digital Agronomy team in 2015. The team have been working with growers to make the most of digital tools available to improve production in simple, cost effective ways. Group General Manager Josh McGregor is the fourth generation of the family to work in the company and is pleased to mark the 120 milestone thanking customers and staff. “Keeping it local has been the key to the longevity and growth of the business, and generations of great people are what has made McGregor Gourlay the business we are today. To be able to celebrate 120 years of serving the agricultural community is a testament to that”. Mr McGregor said.
The Northern Rivers branches of McGregor Gourlay are proud to be celebrating their 3rd anniversary in business this year, opening in 2014 at Lismore, Alstonville, Grafton and Murwillumbah with the focus on horticulture, sugarcane, livestock and broadacre cropping. McGregor Gourlay’s Lismore branch, located at 21 Krauss Avenue, South Lismore is led by 4th generation local Tim Sheridan.
Tim has worked in Agribusiness in the Lismore region for 13 years with strong ties to the local beef cattle industry. When not servicing his customers and team at the store, Tim can be found at local sale yards, out in the paddock working with his cattle or at the local junior soccer.
Keeping with the McGregor Gourlay philosophy of keeping it local, Tim is also supported in the branch by his father Terry. Terry is well known to farmers across the region in his role as delivery driver and storeman. Terry has been servicing rural customers in the region going on 30 years.
The Lismore branch has strong ties to the local Horticulture and Broadacre industries. Producers and customers are supported from within the branch by the combined experience and expertise of Gavin Arthur and Agronomist Angus Legoe. Gavin’s 35 year background in Macadamias and Horticulture combined with his broad knowledge of all local agricultural industries makes him a key service professional for local growers. Agronomist Angus Legoe has 10 years’ experience servicing broadacre cropping clients. Broadacre Cropping across the North Coast is an ever evolving Industry, with local farmers always looking for new crops to trial in the Coastal Sub Tropical climate. This keeps Angus busy providing Agronomic advice to producers covering Soil and Plant Health, Insect and Pest Management and Plant species selection.
The Merchandise and Animal Health sales team in Lismore is made up of Tania Livingston, Libby Chalk and Cameron Black. Tania has also been employed in local Agribusiness servicing local customers for 25 years. When not hard at work in the branch Libby can found on farm working with her cattle or competing on the local campdraft circuit. Cameron is another third generation local who’s family have a long background in beef production and bananas on the North coast.
Tim is very proud of his team in Lismore and describes them as ‘a great mix of experienced specialists and enthusiastic and knowledgeable younger staff’. The Lismore store will be three years old in December, and Tim is excited about the future of the McGregor Gourlay business in Lismore. “It’s been fantastic to be part of something new, and we’re incredibly grateful to our customers for the support they’ve given and the trust they’ve put in us during these first few years. Farming across the North Coast is a diverse and exciting industry, and we’re very proud to be a part of it”.
