Last chance to gain an un­der­stand­ing of soil

THE third and fi­nal work­shop for the Un­der­stand­ing Our Soils project will be held across the re­gion this month and next. The Lo­cal Land­care Ser­vices ses­sions will be de­liv­ered by Judi Earl of Agri­cul­tural In­for­ma­tion & Mon­i­tor­ing Ser­vices.

Dr Earl said land­holder en­gage­ment in the project had been ex­cel­lent and the use of lo­cal data would be rel­e­vant to all of the re­gion’s land­hold­ers. The work­shop will cover:

■ Soil tex­ture and its in­flu­ence on soil fer­til­ity

■ Soil struc­ture

■ Bulk den­sity, poros­ity and soil com­paction

■ Ero­sion and degra­da­tion

■ Soil loss equa­tion

■ Soil wa­ter use ef­fi­ciency

■ Field ca­pac­ity

■ Man­age­ment prac­tices to en­hance soil phys­i­cal char­ac­ter­is­tics.

The work­shop is fully sub­sidised and will run from 9am–4pm in th­ese cen­tres:

■ Casino, Thurs­day, Novem­ber 30

■ Lis­more, Fri­day, De­cem­ber 1

■ Mur­willum­bah, Satur­day, De­cem­ber 2.
