Star shines in penalty shoot-out

The Northern Star - - SPORT -

NORTHERN Star has ended the 16-year premiership run of Glee Far North Coast women’s A-Grade hockey in an extra-time penalty shootout in front of a capacity crowd at Hepburn Park.

It was an excellent game of hockey that included everything at a fast pace, with both teams searching for options in the early stages.

The game ebbed from end to end without troubling the keepers, and 27 minutes passed before Glee forced the first penalty corner of the match which it didn’t convert.

The players were showing signs of heat exhaustion with no score heading into the break.

There was more of the same in the next section with end-to-end play without result.

Both sides put in fantastic defensive efforts and with 11 to go Glee scored but the goal was disallowed because it was too high for first shot in a penalty corner variation.

There were few opportunities in the rest of the half, and it went into extra-time drop-off.

Glee had to start with 8 versus 9 for five minutes due to a suspension right on full-time.

There was no result after the first seven minutes and teams went into the second seven minutes at 7-a-side.

Glee again was reduced a player due to a two-minute suspension in the section.

Still no result and it went into the final seven minutes at 5-a-side.

Neither side could score and they had played 91 minutes without a goal.

The match was settled on a penalty shoot-out with no result in the first five and a win to Star in the second due to determined Star goalkeeper Zoe Cotterill.

Teammate Kate Marshall was named player of the match and awarded the Abby Standing Medal.

The match was umpired by Jane Parrish from East Lismore Club and Annette Asplin (nee Crandell), an ex-player from Far North Coast now Brisbane.
