Ex­treme weather hits whole na­tion

THE week­end’s wild weather has seen snow in Vic­to­ria, hail in Tas­ma­nia and a Gold Coast woman fight­ing for her life af­ter suf­fer­ing a car­diac ar­rest from se­vere heat stress.

The Queens­land Am­bu­lance Ser­vice said the 45-year-old woman, who works at NightQuar­ter mar­kets, col­lapsed about 5.30pm on Satur­day.

She is be­lieved to have been work­ing in a shed, in hot con­di­tions.

The mer­cury soared to close to 40 de­grees in some Gold Coast sub­urbs on Satur­day and yes­ter­day.

In Bris­bane the mer­cury soared to 38 de­grees – eight de­grees above av­er­age in Jan­uary – be­fore a south-easterly change brought cooler tem­per­a­tures in the late af­ter­noon.

In Vic­to­ria snow fell at Mt Hotham as the state shiv­ered through a win­try week­end. Tem­per­a­tures dipped be­low zero in Alpine ar­eas yes­ter­day morn­ing.

In Tas­ma­nia hail blan­keted the small town of Ot­ford on the east coast af­ter an un­sea­son­able down­pour on Satur­day.

Perth is set to be drenched by the tail-end of ex-Trop­i­cal Cy­clone Joyce with as much as 80mm of rain fore­cast.
