Licensed club backs cup meeting
THE Wests Entertainment Group and Tamworth Jockey Club have renewed an old relationship to kick the $150,000 Mercure Tamworth Cup (1400m) up to a new level.
Jockey club general manager Kay Jeffrey and Wests chief executive Rod Laing believe a new two-year sponsorship will be the start of a major partnership for the two organisations.
The Tamworth Cup meeting will be run on Sunday, April 29.
“It’s a great step forward and beneficial to us both,” Jeffrey said.
“This year’s Mercure Tamworth Cup is also worth $150,000, up $50,000 from last year, and that will make it a good quality race. It will attract city-class horses from all the big stables.”
The Tamworth Cup will be previewed by a Cup Calcutta at the Wests licensed club on the Saturday night before the meeting.
“It is going to be a great night and will have something for everyone,” Jeffrey said.
The cup meeting itself will have many additions including a fashion on the field competition with fantastic prizes.
“It’s also a fun family day,” she said. “We have everything to keep the kids entertained including a jumping castle and face painting. We also have a kids fashion on the field.
“We will have plenty of marquee options and will have everything for a great family day out.”
She said the Wests sponsorship was more than just a cup meeting.
“The benefits will be far greater than just the cup,” she said.
“This is more than just sponsorship of the Tamworth Cup; it is a year-long partnership.”
