The Observer - - NEWS NATION -

AN OFF duty Sydney cop who rescued a couple from their burning Sydenham home pounded furiously on their front door before pulling them out. Rescue and Bomb Squad commander Brenton Charlton was driving about 5.45am yesterday when he saw a home alight. He kicked in the front door and removed a man and woman, in their late 70s or early 80s, helped by two passers-by. The couple was treated for smoke inhalation. Superintendent Gavin Wood said: “We are fortunate to have police who see trouble, respond and – without a thought for themselves – save lives. I will be reviewing this incident with a view towards appropriate recognition of his actions.”
