North Korea loses one soldier

The Observer - - NEWS | NATION & WORLD -

NORTH Korean soldiers have shot and wounded a soldier crossing the heavily guarded border to defect to South Korea. In a rare instance of a North Korean defecting through the Joint Security Area at Panmunjom village, where rival border guards stand just metres apart, he bolted from a guard post on the northern side towards the southern side, South Korean military said. Shot in the elbow and shoulder, he was taken by helicopter to a South Korean hospital (pictured). Gunfire was not exchanged. The soldier’s condition and rank was not yet known. A South Korean Defence Ministry official told Reuters: “Since it was an area exposed to the North, we had to crawl towards there to get him out.”
