Gunshot report shuts streets down
BARNEY Point was in lockdown yesterday as police responded to reports a gunshot had been heard by attending a house on Wood St, pictured above.
Officers cordoned off the area between Kianga St and Friend St shortly after 11am, establishing a command post near Yaralla Sports Club and telling passers-by they were not safe unless they were wearing bullet-proof vests.
People living in homes inside the cordoned-off area were advised to stay inside as police officers, detectives and paramedics took control of the otherwise quiet street.
A police spokeswoman said police had been talking with a man on the phone throughout the incident.
The spokeswoman said it could not be confirmed whether the man was armed but officers treated all possible firearm-related incidents as real until they were confirmed otherwise.
The incident at Barney Point itself was calmly resolved about 2pm when officers entered the home and found no one inside.
Police continued to speak with those involved.
