IT WAS a close battle for the title of best fish and chip shop, as voted by The Observer’s Facebook followers, but one favourite has hooked the prize.

Swain’s Seafood and Salad Bar at Toolooa was voted the best place to get fish and chips in Gladstone, with 17 mentions out of 53 comments.

Some of our Facebook followers gave glowing reviews.

“Swains by far. Colin and Gay always out do every shop in town,” Rhiannon Cherry said.

“Highly recommend Swains,” Sam Gawned said.

On Swain’s Facebook page, the business has been rated 4.5 out of 5 stars by 20 patrons.

“Looking for the best fish and chips? This is the place to go and visit. A week will not be complete without grabbing a meal from them,” Duarin Bergantinos said.

“The best fish and chips in my life so far. When I go to Gladstone to visit, I go there. Yum yum,” Kym Saron said.

“Wow. What can I say? Truly the best FRESH feed of fish, prawns and scallops we’ve ever tasted. 5 star,” Julie Ann said.

“Swains never disappoints! Always worth the money,” Kaela Winning wrote.

The Hot Box at the Gladstone Fish Markets also received many votes.

The business, owned by Gladstone resident Simon Whittingham, opened in 2016 with the bold claim that he had the best fish and chips in town.

“Our fish is from Queensland and Australia and I have the access to fresh fish – that’s my big difference,” Mr Whittingham said in an interview with The Observer in 2016.

His hard work seemed to be paying off, coming in second with 12 mentions and also receiving 4.5 out of 5 stars on Facebook.

“Fantastic! Lovely service, fresh and fast food. Great servicing size,” Kristy-lee Baumgart said.

“It would have to be the best feed of fish and chips I’ve had in a long time,” Tim Machen said.

Tannum Beach Fish and Chips came in at third place, being mentioned eight times by our Facebook followers.

Other votes from the public include MJ’s on Boyne, Fordy’s Seafood on Tank St, and Red Prawn in Gladstone West.
