Brave mum to take flight in family’s Splashed Avo

The Observer - - NATION -

MANY people might have had tongue-in-cheek thoughts about pushing their mother off a 6m platform into water but that’s exactly what one family plans to do.

Kay Henthorn will be on board a homemade avocadoinspired flying machine, pictured today, all in the name of fun. Son Josh, 22, is the brains behind the design and 49-yearold Kay made an offhand commitment to fly the creation in the Red Bull Flugtag competition, if the design was successful.

The family team Splashed Avo, which includes daughter Gabby and husband Russel, was one of those selected from hundreds of entries and Kay began gearing herself up for what could be a bumpy ride.

For the health conscious Victorian family, an avocado was an obvious choice for a flying machine. “We are really into fitness and healthy eating and it just came into my head first,” he said.

Kay, described as “up for anything”, will be pushed 30m by her family to the platform edge before trusting that the machine will soar through the air. “This is probably the most extreme thing that I have ever done,” she said. The teams will be judged on flight distance, creativity of the craft and showmanship when they take the plunge today at Mrs Macquaries Point, Sydney.
