Ipswich remains an epicentre of racing

Popularity of Cup Day matched by quality of horses

The Queensland Times - - News - CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME

RACING in Ipswich has an immensely proud history dating back to the 1840’s and was once the epicentre of the sport in Queensland.

Whilst much has changed over the past 180 years Ipswich is still the epicentre of racing in Australia on Ipswich Cup Day.

There are plenty of clubs in South East Queensland competing for the crowds and glamour that define the Winter Racing Carnival but none can compete with the mighty Ipswich Cup crowd of over 20,000 year after year.

The community support for the event is unmatched in Queensland and Ipswich Cup Day continuously features in the top 20 race day attendances in Australia.

The popularity of the day is not confined to partygoers either. This year, we had 206 horses from across Australia and around the world nominated by some of Australia’s leading trainers to compete for almost $1 million in prizemoney on offer.

The Ipswich Turf Club is about to undergo a $13 million transformation into a modern racing and function centre that will not only provide state-ofthe-art facilities for members and guests on race days but also a conference, function and entertainment centre which can be utilized by the Ipswich community all year round.

After years of promises, public announcements and many false starts, work will finally commence after this year’s Cup to demolish a number of buildings, bars and race day stalls that are well beyond their functional use by dates. These works will be closely followed by the construction of new facilities that will be finished for next year’s Cup.

Whilst these exciting and transformational changes will pave the way for a secure future for the club for generations to come, we are mindful of the wonderful history and hard work that has preceded us.

As our long history has taught us, nothing comes easy for Ipswich, which is why tenacity is one of our community’s most recognised traits.

In recognition of that proud history we have recently

opened our Racing Museum on course. I would encourage you to have a wander through when you are at the track.

Perfect weather, exciting quality racing and great camaraderie. Those are the elements that define Ipswich Cup Day and 2018 is set to be a classic example.

Thanks for your continued support.

There are plenty of winners in the form guide so happy punting and good luck.

Ipswich Turf Club chairman Wayne Patch.
