FLETCHER Harris’ speedy 2017 karting season wrapped up last weekend with a final round win at Melbourne’s Todd Road circuit.

The Echuca youngster has put together another brilliant year of results, finishing second in the Cadet 12 class of the National Championships held over five rounds around Australia.

He also placed second in the state titles for the same class, as well as winning last month’s City of Melbourne race, one of the country’s biggest events.

Harris said the triumph at the City of Melbourne race, his second consecutive win there, along with the round five of the National Championship win were his favourites to date, because he’d had to beat all of Australia’s best racers of his age to take the races out.

The 12-year-old’s second place finish at the national level won him a trip to Italy, adding to more than $5000 he had already won in his career to date.

It was a tough year at times for Harris, engine troubles and some bad luck on the track costing him a chance to take the challenge up to Cadet 12 champion James Wharton who ended up running away with the class.

With his best race engine not running at times, he had to race with his practice engine on the kart meaning he couldn’t quite hit top speed.

The National Championships were run around Australia at five different tracks: Newcastle, Monarto (SA), Emerald (QLD), Geelong and Melbourne the venues.

Having completed his fourth year of racing, Harris will step up into the junior class next year, but he said he was just as confident he could perform well at the level with the bigger and more powerful karts.

Harris was the 2016 Cadet 12 karter of the year, an award previously won by V8 Supercars trio Jamie Whincup, Tony D’Alberto and Cam Waters, and it’s no surprise to hear the young motoring enthusiast say he would love to one day follow in the racing drivers’ footsteps.
