Perfect timing for cyclist’s sprint finish

The Riverine Herald - - SPORT -

JADE Maddern timed her sprint to perfection, winning the Noel Smith Memorial cycling race by just a few metres.

Maddern was in the leading field when a last ditch dash from Chase Costello-Manning saw him blast to the front, in search of the line.

But Maddern and second-place getter Angus McLean roped him in — Maddern taking the lead with just 50m remaining.

The memorial race is held each year by the Echuca Moama Cycling Club in remembrance of former club president Noel Smith who died during a training ride for the 2006 Murray to Moyne fundraiser for Echuca Regional Health.

Nathan Smith attended the EMCC race on behalf of the Smith family.

In the race, which featured 45 riders split over 39 minutes, it was an interesting test, given the gusty breeze and longer race distance.

All bunches suffered casualties within 10km, which levelled the playing field.

On the second lap, the middle bunches looked the best chance of victory with the second and scratch groups still 10 minutes off the pace going into the last lap.

The middle bunches converged in the last lap, by which time the scratch and second-scratch bunches had merged.

Their gap to the lead was down to about four minutes at the last turnaround point.

From there a final dash to the line loomed with all groups coming together with just 1.5km to the ribbon.

With Maddern crossing the line first, the EMCC is heading back to Koyuga this week for race six of the Ivan and Lorraine Collings Series. Results First: Jade Maddern Second: Angus McLean Third: Trent Stevenson Fourth: Liam Edwards Fifth: Chase Costello-Manning. Angus McLean claimed the fastest time.
