Don is one of the founding members of the Halswell Menzshed. He emigrated from England in 1972 and has spent 55 years as a precision tool maker. His skills as an engineer have been put to good use in the shed, where he has built a variety of tools for shed members to use. The most recent is a metal ring roller. This is capable of bending rounds, flats, and square-section tubing and is a joy to use. His skill on the wood lathe is amazing. His wooden fruit and segmented bowls are real works of art. Tiny segments of wood are individually glued together and then the whole assembly is turned inside and out on the lathe — a very skilled operation in which the slightest miscalculation with the chisel will result in disaster, and the test of a true craftsman. His love of precision work extends to his making pens from all varieties of wood. He sells these to raise funds for charities. These make beautiful gifts — if you want one for that special person in your life, you can contact Don at email@example.com.
