Etah James gets her chance to take the next step into stakes grade when she lines up in the time-honoured Bagot Handicap at Flemington on New Year’s Day.

Trainer Matt Cumani looks to have a real talent on his hands with the Kiwibred mare who only started racing as a late four-year-old but already has an imposing record.

Her dominant all-theway win at Caulfield last start made it five victories from her last six starts and down to the limit weight in the Bagot will give her more experienced rivals something to catch.

Spring is a long way off, but if she can keep the ball rolling in Monday’s distance event it would be no surprise to see her tucked away and given a chance at the big time next season.
