Brisbane Preview

The Sportsman Weekend - - Detailed For Mguide For Doomben - with Greg Spletter

Race 1

Tough little staying race to open the card and I’m sticking with EMERALD CITY who after two improving runs should be ready to produce something like his best. Not at home fresh on the set track at Eagle Farm before a better effort in the Toowoomba Cup over 2000m. He won four in a row when he hit his straps last campaign and against a very average line -up here he looks reasonable value at $3.80. Such is the weakness of the field that MR LEBROCK can get walloped his last three and still be single figure odds. He wasn’t suited by the soft track firstup, was left at start second-up and did go better here last start finishing close -up behind Ruling Force. He has a bit of talent over these staying trips when he’s right and he is a big show to pick up a cheque for the first time this prep. My mental notes have COMACINA as both non-winner and a midweeker, though his last four certainly have him flagged for reassessment. He won a class five four runs back against an average lot but he backed it up with

good effort behind Morendi in open class. Last time out Made a lot of ground in a Bm85 and drops little in weight here back up to open grade, but I can’t possibly come into him at $2.60. He has just spent too long in the wilderness at this level.

Race 2

COOROI CHASE does look the standout here as the only last- start metro winner in race. She scored an incredible trial win at Deagon be - fore making her debut and it was a tidy win here over this trip scoring by over a length. It was a heavy-8 and the breed do appreciate the sting out of ground, but assuming she can bring it to a dry surface tomorrow she will go close. Well drawn and the $3.80 feels about right. SISTA ACT has a placing behind Houtzen to her credit, though it was a distant one. Disappointed two runs back in the Calaway Gal but on her best form she is right up to this. Drawn awkwardly but the $9.00 quote is fair compensation. GIRL IN A MILLION is an odd duck who belted her opposition at her home track on debut then was sent out an odds - favourite, went like the clappers and fell in a heap to beat one home. Should last longer ridden with a touch more patience and is one for your multiples as a possible sharp improver.

Race 3

The last at Randwick tomorrow was SIREN’S FURY’s to lose so the fact that they have opted head north for black type is encouraging. Scored a big win at Albury two runs back coming from last over 1400m and was subsequently sent out with some sup - port in the Listed South Pacific. Put in another barnstorming run to finish just a half length from the winner and at set weight she will give this a mighty shake. One of several Sydney raider on the program with strong claims and very happy to take the $4.60. CANDIKA is a classy filly who has been working herself back into form in weaker company but is well up to these. A little disappointing when a close third to Deep Image here last time but she will run the trip out. Not entitled be $2.65 with top pick engaged is a big danger. I thought OUR BEEBEE might be a big carnival surprise but she didn’t do much back on a dry track last time after creating a big impression with a hat-trick on soft tracks. Looks a bit short at $4.20 for filly that went so poorly last time, but if she reproduces her soft track form here will just about win.

Race 4

The favourite will be very hard to beat here but he is not invulnerable and at the big odds I’m jumping onto CONFRONTING to cause a minor upset. He’s been a model of consis - tency in weaker grade, but last start he drew right off the track and still battled on to finish just a length a bit behind two of best class sixers going round up here in Taillevent and Privlaka. He was also up to 57.5kg that day and dropping back a furlong to the 1000m dash so he carried plenty of negatives going into the run. Back out his pet trip tomorrow, dropping back down to the minimum and jump - ing from a good gate, he is great value at $12.00. LAND OFFICE definitely looms as the main threat following a close -up third to Quatronic at this level. There aren’t that many chances in this but the $2.60 is nowhere close to drawing me in on this bloke. SAY YOU LOVE ME is knockout hope down the bottom resuming here from an inform stable. Ran some good races last campaign including a close -up run behind Better Land in strong class three and if the pace goes on she will be running home strongly.

Race 5

Very hard open sprint here and I’m on IRISH CONSTABULARY here without a great deal of confidence. Scored an incredible win in the Country Cup on Millions day at Gold Coast back in January before a solid effort in weaker company in Bm85 at the Sunshine Coast. He goes well fresh, has drawn the paint and with J Lloyd steering he has to be a hope. Rising nine but still going well the $4.60 is probably on the money. DIVINE CENTURI ran a shocker at her first try on wet ground in the Goldmarket last start and it may pay to pen the run completely. Going instead on her previous run when second

flying Pinch River she has to be a chance in this. She’s been freshened up and having never missed a place at Doomben she looks decent value at $10. SWEET SERENDIPITY will lead here and is half a chance of getting some soft sectionals midrace. Stuck on well at her last two in Sydney but I’m not so sure about the quality she was racing against. Not worst and with the hint of a soft lead she looks right at $5.00.

Race 6

The form around GUARD OF HONOUR is awfully strong and after many months out of the winners’ circle this is his race. Strong battling run be - hind Man From Uncle in the Eskimo Prince back in February then although outclassed the Oakleigh Place he wasn’t disgraced, finishing five lengths from Sheidel and Faatinah. Scored a nice trial win at home last week and he’s a good bet $4.80. The $34 about THUNDER RAIDER caught my eye as good overs as she resumes here from a break. Won three in a row at the end of her last campaign high grade 3yo company and with couple of trials under belt she could run a cheeky race fresh. Drawn the inside and worth a saver at the big price no matter who you’re on. ALL OVER BO - SANOVA has opened up $3.60 favourite following four unbeaten runs to date. She won them all by convincing margins, but while she beat a couple of good 3yo’s at her latest run, her previous victories were against significantly inferior opposition to what she faces here. I can’t leave her out and gets a spot in the quaddie for sure, but there are better options.

Race 7

Another Sydneysider with form enough that she really should beat them tomorrow. Found the Coolmore Classic a bit stiff when beaten six lengths on the soft-6 but got through the heavy-9 okay last run finishing just a length from Assign and Astronomos in the Neville Selwood. He last outing on a dry track resulted in a Group One win Vinery Stud for the fillies, and at her previous dry track run she finished second to Ghisoni in Surround Stakes. Get on at the $4.80. SIR MOMENTS ran a big race here last weekend flashing home behind Siegfried over 1350m and he gets a kilo off into this stronger event. Certainly has claims tomorrow but I’m not sure he is classy enough to give Single Gaze 2.5kg and beat her at the mile. TOO GOOD TO REFUSE couldn’t get there on the heavy track last start and the return to a dry surface here should help his finishing sprint. He gets a good weight pull off the two top hope but he will need every ounce of it to beat them. Cracking field with several other minor chances engaged.

Race 8

If we can put a line through BOUND FOR LOVE’s last run when beaten 67 lengths by Neuschwanstein then the $12 on offer is the best overs you will see all day. Jeff Lloyd got off and said she didn’t handle going, that’s good enough for me. Her only other run this prep was a tidy win at Eagle Farm under 60kg and she ran some big races around this level when last in work . Needs a smidgin of luck from the wide draw but if she is back on song she will give this shake. KUZNETSOVA went past them as though they were nailed to the fence last start at Toowoomba, producing a big finish to score easily. She was outclassed a little by Candika the run prior but this is well within her scope and with Mr Lloyd on top from an ideal draw she a real danger. DON’T TELL MAMA chased her home at Toowoomba after scoring a nice win here in a strong 0MW. Not without a hope and worth throwing in at the $10. These three are probably all you need to have the last leg covered.
