Brisbane Preview

The Sportsman Weekend - - Detailed Formguide For Eagle Farm - with Greg Spletter

Race 1 Lots of value in this program with large, competitive fields and formlines coming from everywhere, but I’m sticking with my local boy SONY LEGEND to do the right thing for us again. It was real Sony Legend last start running on from a long way off the lead to catch handy Bm90 field over the 1200m, and he actually drops a half a kilo into this despite the win. He loves it wet, but I was a touch disappointed with him on this track two runs back in the Victory Stakes. Still, it’s hard to impress be - hind Music Magnate when that horse is on song, and against this Bm95 the $7.50 is very appealing. UPSTART PRIDE eyeballed Redzel in the 10,000 two weeks ago and fair enough I suppose. At 150/1 he was entitled to throw caution to the wind, but he will go much better tomorrow back a more reasonable grading for him. He has won three races this prep, all by leading at a good tempo and running them into the ground from the wide draw you can bet Rebecca Williams will be pushing him forward to set the speed again. Good saver material at $12 considering the lack of speed. BURNING PASSION has come up favourite on the back of an encouraging first-up run at Hawkesbury when held up behind Felines. He likes it wet but he is also up 4kg and from the draw I can see him covering ground with no cover and as is a risk . Race 2 DUCA VALENTINOIS finally struck gold at Scone a fortnight ago running on stoutly to win the Cup over this trip in good style. He has shown glimpses the past but hadn’t put it all together until his latest run and although up 6kg tomorrow he does handle the conditions and should be at his peak . Looks about right at the $4.80 at weight for age. AMOVATIO does prefer to race on top of the ground but he has performed in conditions in the past and did run on nicely Scone Cup behind the top pick . He will have to give away a tidy start again tomorrow but will strip fitter. RELIGIFY has come up very short at $2.35 and while I was happy to be on him last start I’m jumping off here given the state of the track . All 11 of his victories have come on good surfaces and on a soft-5 or soft-6 the mile will feel like 1800m. Sure he can win, but this is a good field and will be gasping for air over the last 100m. A lay for mine at that quote. Race 3 There are so many chances here with such diverse formlines that it’s hard to have much confidence, but for the record I’m on MALAHAT who is a very well bred colt from the Go - dolphin team. He led all way firstup over 1200m to score an easy win in a maiden at Canterbury and it’s not easy to resume over that trip as leader. He had form behind some smart types when last in work such Pariah and Invader, and from the wide draw he will undoubtedly push forward be in the first four or so on settling. If kiwi colt goes mad from the outside gate I can see this bloke either on his shoulder on settling or in the one - one. There looks to be plenty of upside with him and at $7.00 he’ll do. MELODY BELLE is a last start Group One winner over in NZ and while that doesn’t necessarily mean as much over here, she did win the Karaka Millions at her previous outing back in January. Those two put together signifies some real talent to me and while I don’t want to

her on top at the $4.20 she could quite possibly blow them out of the water. TANGLED hit the line impres - sively in the Classic last start to make it two a row after scoring over 1350m at Wyong. Obviously handled the wet okay and the trips suits, but he will be giving some handy leaders a tidy start at turn. Race 4 BENZINI finished third in this race last year before winning the Brisbane Cup and after two nice runs back I’m jumping on at a healthy $13. Beaten a lip first-up over 2000m at Group One level in NZ before a somewhat disappointing result as favourite over the same trip. He’s back again for his annual raid and he won’t be far from

action at the end of 2200m. Well over the odds. PEMBERLEY has pro - duced moderate results from his two runs back but they will have cleaned out the pipes and he should be ready to lift his game here. Won two in a row last before a cracking run the Herbert Power where he stayed touch with some very good stayers and at $17 is a nice each way hope. STAMPEDE went back to back last start with an all the win in The Chairman’s beating, coincidentally, The Chairman, and he hasn’t done a whole lot wrong in nine starts. This is harder tomorrow he’s no value at $3.00 but he has genuine claims to bring up his hat-trick . Race 5 PRIZED ICON was dropped way back from a failure in the Derby at the beginning of April to 1400m Scone fortnight ago and ran out of his skin. He was nutted by France on the line and back up to 2200m tomorrow with that hitout under his belt he will beat these. He’s the class act and at $3.60 is hard to go past on value. VOLATILE MIX is a small question mark in the going, although he did run on well on the soft-6 in Adelaide prior to taking out Derby there two weeks later. Nicely bred and I thought he might be a touch shorter than $10 in this line -up. SHOCKING LUCK was far too strong for them in the Rough Habit last start getting through the ground without a worry to score by nearly three lengths but this is significantly tougher tomorrow. Chance, but he shouldn’t be heading the betting with P rized Icon in the field. Race 6 Where to look here, another lottery for the girls and looking for some - thing at value I’ve settled on TURBO MISS $21. Won the Tressady at Flemington over autumn carnival, and lasdt start made good ground in the Victoria Hcp behind Hooked and Charmed Harmony. That’s solid form for this, though she will need things to go her way from gate 20. Nice each way hope the champion stable. RAIMENT is very short at $3.00 and she will find this harder than her last start towelling of the JB Carr field. She, too, has drawn a shocker and will need luck to find good spot early on. Considering the formlines of this pair I can’t understand such a price differential. EGYPTIAN SYMBOL is overrated and they have pulled the right rein scratching from the Group One

chasing a far more attainable goal at Group Three level. Even effort in Adelaide last time and she does handle the conditions. No complaints at $7.00 either which is what they offered about her in the G1 last time. Race 7 BLACK HEART BART is on the quick back-up here after a slightly disappointing run in the Goodwood last weekend and D Weir wouldn’t run him here unless he was going well. The opposition isn’t all that strong tomorrow – there are no Redzels, no Russian Revolutions – and while he has never won on soft ground he

run a couple of crackers in top grade. Happy to be him at $3.40 but we should get closer to $4.00 by racetime. JUNGLE EDGE has been in scintillating form this preparation and it seems that for some, life begins at six and a half. He has been G1-placed behind the best we have twice this campaign and ran away for an easy win at Doomben last start. There’s not speed he will have a kick in him on straightening. DERRYN hit the line strongly behind Redzel last start in the 10,000 and he has drawn very well here. If they race him on at four I would back him in to pick up a G1, but if they are sending to stud next spring he is fast running out of time to score at the top level. Race 8 FRANCE scored an amazing win in the Scone Guineas last start, coming from that tail after drawing wide and mowing down a classy animal like Prized Icon. He has drawn way out there again tomorrow but is a colt go - ing places and at $13 great value. He has a decent result in soft going to his name if he handles the track will be right in the finish. GOOD STANDING hit his straps second-up scoring an easy win at Listed level at Doomben two weeks ago. No worries with the conditions underfoot and although drawn badly he is a very good colt who has the talent to win again. RIVER RACER ran on well again last start and continues encourage followers with her incredible finishes. I thought she might be a bit better than $12 considering the rise in grade, but that’s still a fair quote and you should find spot for her in your quaddie.
