Miller has Jewel of a youngster
TRAINER Simon Miller is rarely short of a smart twoyear-old and he might have a good one on his hands in OCEAN JEWEL.
The Ocean Park filly made short work of her 1000m trial at Belmont on Monday, showing she’s come since her only other public appearance back in January where he won a 400m scamper.
She sat off the pace in her heat, cruised past leaders with a furlong left and raced nicely clear late.
Another filly to catch the eye was PEARL TRADE, beaten as a $2.70 chance at her debut back in February, whose almost five length win may have been even better than it looked.
She settled last and was pulling then strode around the field to hit the lead on turn and dashed clear, with a couple of reminders. AL CAPITANO probably should have won his heat by more than half a length after he was badly bailed up and lost momentum before recovering to win.
This colt had a couple of trials back in December but this one was superior. Blackfriars gelding NOIR DE
RUE hit the line down the outside late for third in his first trial at 1000m.
The 1000m open trial featuring VEUVE DE VEGA, VALDERI VALDERA and BADGE OF COURAGE might prove to be a strong one going forward.
It’s surprising that Veuve De Vega has only won one race but he taken on some handy three-year-olds and he looked strong edging away late to win.
Valderi Valdera is an honest sprinting mare who led the trial and stayed on well while Badge Of Courage is a lightly raced three-year-old and he finished the heat off in good style late.
Ex-Sydney galloper APOLLO ran second in a blanket finish to his first WA trial after being blocked for runs for much of the straight. TOW ROPE is at risk of being a barrier trial champion after taking out his fourth trial, very nicely, from five attempts.
He’s only had the one start to date, in September, and beat one home. LADY LATTE is a bit of a late starter, being four, but she was dominant and showed nice turn of foot in taking out her first trial since December.
