The Sportsman Weekend - - Detailed Formguide For Doomben - with Greg Spletter

Race 1

Small field engaged here and the market sees it as a race in two, but both favourites carry their fair share of convictions and at the odds I’m giving ANTON EN AVANT a hope of knocking them over. He’s now had four runs back from a break, the best which was his latest hitout when three lengths Mr Epic over this course and distance. He gets a little weight turnaround here, and Jim Byrne goes on. Further improvement in him and at the $9.50 he’s worth a punt. MR EPIC battled on strongly to hold out King Viv here a fortnight ago and after the claim is only up a half kilo for the win. I think he’s better suited back at

mile and with slight creep up in the weights distance I’ll risk him here at the $2.20, but he’s obviously a genuine threat. MONTEUX is second pick on boards at $2.70 on the back of a good run behind Mr Epic. Could have finished closer with luck and down on the limit weight here he will give a good sight.

Race 2

Nice value here at the $13 with EXPAT ENVY and if he can get a little luck early on from tricky draw he will give it a shake. He has form around some reasonable types, he was runner-up to Subsolar last weekend and at his previous outing was close -up in a much stronger Class three behind Miss Dubois and Natural Black . He’s as good as any, at the price is a great bet. PINOLINO is very consistent in weaker company, though the claim and the perfect gate bring her right into focus. Narrowly beaten over the mile here last start and with a 1.5kg drop should be very competitive, though she hasn’t been missed at $3.70. BRONZEGATE is shooting for a hat-trick tomorrow after two provincial victories, the latest a narrow victory in an average class three at the Sunshine Coast. With couple of others drawing all of the attention, $7.00 about this bloke looks fair value.

Race 3

BEAUDACIOUS is considerably better than these and if she returns to racing as her old self tomorrow she will win. She has never missed a place fresh, and first-up last campaign flashed home over 1000m to beat all but the very much in-form Our Bee - bee. She has form around Tiyatrolani and Thunder Raider when both fillies were in top form, and at $6.00 she will go very close. MADAME LILY is having her first start up north after rac

fairly consistently in low-restricted midweek grade Sydney for the Snowden camp. Two runs back she scored a narrow win in a Bm67 girls at her first start on dry track which is encouraging, but she will need all sorts of luck early to find a spot from the outside barrier. The $7.00 seems a pretty fair quote me, despite draw. NAVUA MIST has won her last two but rises in grade here as she tries to convert the hattrick . She can carry weight to be sure, and has drawn well here. She will like - ly lead these but with good pressure on up front will need to be very strong to hold on. Each way hope.

Race 4

STELLA OMBRA is a different horse this prep having won three of his last four including an incredibly tough performance last weekend to hold off the smart Tumbler over 1200m. There’s plenty of speed here with any number of them looking to go forward and form the inside draw all Tiffani Brooker has to do is make sure she gets around the tired ones on straightening to give her charge some clean air. He’s up 4kg on his last run but that won’t stop him here and he will be very strong late. Best of the day at the $3.50. TAIL - LEVENT was out of sorts at Randwick last start and I’m prepared to overlook that anomaly and go instead on his previous good effort sitting off the speed and running on late. Flashed home two starts ago to beat all but Irish Constabulary and with the speed on here he will get every chance to finish over the top. HANWRITTEN has come up awfully short at $2.40 and will deserve every inch of a win here if he can get home. He knows how to get beaten as a favourite, though he did score nice win two runs back at Randwick when resuming, albeit in weaker grade. He will be swamped for the lead here by Rocky King et al, and I’m happy to risk him.

Race 5

SHARPAMAL may need a small miracle here to make the field, but if he sneaks in he is one to beat from the perfect gate. His form dipped a little on the heavy tracks earlier this prep, but his last two in strong 3yo grade back on top of the ground are more than enough to get him home here. Ran them along over 1350m here two runs ago before getting run down by Care To Think, then again made the play out in front and stuck to his guns in the straight behind Denbern. Money to nothing each way at the $7.40 given we are guaranteed a start or money back. There are only two possible hopes of beating Sharpamal, the first being KUBIS who hasn’t won a race in eons but has been very consistent nonetheless. Just pipped at his latest run over this course and distance by MEET AND GREET there isn’t much between them again tomorrow. could still have some upside after chalking up the mile win second-up but meets Kubis a little worse at the weights for

narrow victory. Big field, these three have it between themselves.

Race 6

Tomorrow is OINK’s chance to re - turn to winning form after tantalising at his last couple in good grade. No match for P rioritise last time, though he should have finished closer, and ran on strongly at his previous run at the end of 1000m. Drawn perfectly, out to perfect trip and on top of

ground as he prefers. Most all, he as thrown in at the weights under this scale, getting 4.5kg from those up the top. Only bad luck can beat him and he looks a good bet at $2.70. ONE INCH PUNCH goes better on a wet track , but has had plenty of hi- touts on the track in preparation for an usual fresh run over this trip and he should go well. Beat a good open field three runs back trip and since May has had four trials over 1000-1200m to prepare for his return. Can’t see him beating the favourite unless the clouds roll in, but he’s a good each way hope. AHNDRAS is a promising type who will probably need the run tomorrow but is worth monitoring for future reference. Picked up a hat-trick in fine style when last in work and with only 51kg has a big headstart on most of these.

Race 7

Wide open fields in the last three here, and although he will need a bit of luck from the nasty draw, the form around MISHANI EL LOBO is more than enough to put him on top. Made his presence felt two starts back when beaten a lip by Publishing Power and he finished couple of lengths in front of Oink . All over the shop last start in a far superior 2-3yo event under 59kg and drops back to limit weight tomorrow. Hasn’t faced such an easy assignment since he bolted in at Murwillimbah at the beginning of January and at $13 is a top chance each way. I’m including VOLTAIRE LUMIERE again here given that he’s getting up over a better trip, he goes okay second-up and he wasn’t far from the action when resuming here three weeks ago. He was only a couple of lengths from Khalam on the line after playing up at the gates and at $61 could put 98% of quaddie tickets in the bin. Don’t be scared to have a couple each way him at the big price, as this is a seriously underwhelming 0MW event. RHYME NOR RHYTHM is unbeaten first-up in three tries and gets an A+ for consistency. Left them standing

last prep when a six length winner over 1000m at Toowoomba, and performed well in this grade at his next run. Drawn ideally and while the value isn’t there at $4.60 he will be a tough nut to crack . Race 8 I’m sticking with FELINO BEL here after watching her run home when it was too late first-up over 1050m. The extra distance suits here and she proved her worth around this level last campaign when third to a couple of nice fillies over this track and dis - tance. Drawn the paint outside of the toppy who has 59kg the outside gate, she’s only taking on laststart country winners. Top odds at $23. CELLARGIRL has a mountain to overcome here but is the class act having won a Listed race here at her last run before the break. She beat Bring It Home Pop at her only other fresh

and despite hurdles she looks over the odds $8.00. A must for your quaddie. WHYPEEO ran fair time at his only start when a five lengths winner at Ballina fortnight ago. Has to do it in a completely different environment here, as well as having to push it out to 1200m. Unknown quantity but happy risk him at $3.40.

Race 9

ORADONNA hasn’t missed a beat this prep and despite drawing awkwardly I’m on here at the $8.50. Flashed home behind Spur Le Jouer two runs back over this trip, then again gave them a start and hit the line strongly to beat all but the flying Stella Ombra. That form is miles better than this 0MW, and with a patient ride sitting back off the fence with cover she will have plenty in the tank when they straighten. CAPETOWN HUSSEY may need the run, but she can finish off strongly on fresh legs and at $23 is worth throwing into your quaddie. First-up last prep she came from near last in a strong class three over this trip and was only beaten three lengths on the line by Brooklyn Storm. She went score back to back wins over mile and although better suited at the distance, she’ll be hitting the line here. STAR OF NIGHT is gunning for her hat-trick tomorrow after winning last two before a spell. She is up in class to - morrow, but hasn’t finished further back than second in four fresh runs and from the inside draw has to be given some chance.
