The Sportsman Weekend - - Detailed Formguide For Gold Coast - with Greg Spletter

Race 1

Not really a day for good things at the Gold Coast, but the best of them comes up in the first in OF THE DAY who has won two of her last three. Tough win at Doomben start over this trip, and she wasn’t disgraced two starts back in the strong two and three -year- old race won by P rioritise. Looks about right at $2.70 with Robbie Fradd on board we can invest a decent portion of our starting bank with confidence. ESPIRITU is be - coming a pest for me. I know her talent but she is not a consistent mare, only showing enough every few runs to draw me in again. Runner-up in open class behind Pinch River earlier in the year, and a good run in Melbourne fresh, but I won’t be putting her on top again until she puts two together. Still, at 25/1 you can throw

into multiples for value as she is better than these on her day. FINAL ZERO is on the second line of betting and has drawn well. Beaten a lip by Of The Day last time and on virtually the same terms will be within neck or so of her again. Race 2 Below average field of open grade sprinters here with half them out of form and the other hopelessly outclassed. HARD STRIDE has been racing okay without looking like winning one, and against this line -up will go close. Decent enough fresh run behind Stella Ombra and although his second-up form leaves a lot to be desired, from the perfect draw he can just about get away with this and is a fair (equal) favourite at $4.00. SONY LEGEND my old fave has lost that ping in his finish that we all know he has, and he might be ready for a break . Super win at his last run here when last-to -first over 1200m, but has missed a place all five runs since. Still, this is a very easy assign- ment and he has a hope. LONDEHERO needs the speed on to figure and while there are plenty here who like to camp close to the speed, they might find themselves all looking at each other while Rocky King gets some sweet sectionals out in front. He won’t give away as big a start as he sometimes does and has been freshened up which is plus. Race 3 While no good thing, HINGUS ROSE is by far the best value all day and should be less than half her current $19 quote. She has only missed a place once, and chalked up second career win two runs back with a good effort in a decent juvenile event. Beaten by smart one l ast time over 1050m and as the young filly up against the old folk here jumps out with only 51.5kg. Awesome value. I would have thought BONSHO would be f avourite here after scoring i n similar grade last start at Doomben. Chased home Khalama her previous two and from the great gate has to be a strong hope. Looks a touch of value herself at $4.00. The bulk the book has been hoovered up by SARAJEVO who for some reason is $3.70 favourite despite having missed a place at each of his last six starts. He has been trialling in preparation for return since April 12 this year and had six trial hitouts since then. He has won just one race from 17 starts on top of the ground and has drawn a shocker. He showed some ability about three years ago but other definitely make more appeal here. Race 4 OUTRAGED is another who I consider by no means a good thing, just the second best one I can find. He was given hope last start when he needed binoculars to see the second-last horse at the 600m and af- ter a weaving passage still managed to close to a long head behind Yaba Dabl Doya. Bound to be a little closer over the longer trip tomorrow and drops a half kilo for that outstanding run. Very happy to stick with him here at $4.00. MR EPIC continues to race well and it was no disgrace

be beaten by Monteux last start who looked very good on the day. Beat him the run prior and while he’s weighted up to his best, he only really has to beat my top pick to win again. ANTON EN AVANT is getting closer

a win after finishing third Monteux and Mr Epic last time. Not so keen on the drop back to 1800m, and I will probably wait until he strikes a wet surface before jumping back on but he is in the mix here, at least for a place. Race 5 These $30k R70 races are a poor cousin to the class three plates and JADEDFOX gets her chance to pick up another one to go with the similar event she picked up in town at the end of July. Didn’t handle drop back to 1200m, nor the class rise, last time when a distant fourth to Of The Day, but her previous form this prep was good. Great each way hope at $6 with J Lloyd on board. MALKARA will have his work cut out getting across from 15 but it’s hard to knock his form at home. Brought up his hat-trick this circuit last weekend with a comfortable win over a small field under 61kg. This is step up in class tomorrow but he in top form. DRIVING WHEELS did it tough last time behind Jadedfox covering extra ground in the run but wasn’t beaten far on line. No favours here with barrier 20 but it’s hard to believe he will cover as much extra turf tomorrow and at $20 is capable of upsetting the apple cart. Race 6

Not an overly strong affair and I’m circling back to my old mate MARKS - FIELD who bobs up every few runs in this type of event without a lot warning. Great run in town two starts back behind Khaleesi a much stronger race before only battling over the longer trip last time under big weight. Back to 1200m tomorrow and has drawn get a nice run in transit. Down to 56kg after the claim at around $20 is each way bet. TYCOON ACE has runs on the board and is the deserved $4.40 favourite here. Closed late behind Khalama over the shorter trip two runs ago before bouncing back with a good win leading all the way from an awkward draw. He’ll go forward again and if he can get across will be hard to run down. NEPTUNE PALACE has been in the first two at his last four appearances, the latest a close second to Khaleesi a similar Bm80. Racing very well and should find spot in your quaddie. Race 7 No topliners engaged here and although still a maiden the form of ITALIA BELLA should measure up. Placed in the Champagne Classic at Group Two level during the winter carnival and followed that up with more black type in The Phoenix be - hind picket fence -builder Pardoe. Drawn ideally and at $4.60 is the one to be on. SHOGUN SUN equal fave at $3.70 on the back of tidy win in very wet conditions at Randwick last run. Didn’t set world on fire up here prior to that, with by far his best run coming on similar wet ground behind Bring It Home Pop. May need those conditions to justify his quote. PARADIS IMPERIAL got through late at Townsville last start to bring up her seventh win from only 12 starts and she is a winner in town in Saturday company. Drawn the paint and should get all the favours in running, I’d be throwing her in the quaddie at the $12 for value. Race 8 Sticking with DENARIUS here taking on an easier class six field than he is used to. Nice effort in Sydney last start in the wet conditions after finishing off nicely first-up behind Khalama over an unsuitable trip. Should find some cover in running here and the 1400m has always looked his best trip. Another decent each way prop - osition at $7.00. BACKSLAPPER is not entitled to $11 after running home nicely in a much stronger class six behind Havasay at Doomben last start. He goes well here, should relish the extra furlong and has drawn ide - ally. CORNROW wasn’t completely disgraced in a superior class six be hind Oink last time and is rarely far from the action. He’ll need a touch of luck draw but must for multiples at $12 in this average event. Race 9 When in doubt, lean on the picket fence and ROBBERS COBBER has been doing a fine job this prep once he found his form. His first three over the shorter trips were forgettable but since hitting the mile he has kept on winning, his last two over this course and distance. Lots to like for a $10 shot. SUBSOLAR is on the same line of betting and has returned from let-up in June in fine fettle. Scored a good win at the Sunshine Coast two runs ago then tried hard in a class five in town over mile trip. Suited this distance and has a big finish when right. ANOTHER LARGA is around the same price at $9.50 which seems a good for a horse beaten just a length at Canterbury last start. Won two of his previous three starts leading all the way and could take catch

here if left alone in front.
