Bowman confident Winx will continue her streak
HUGH Bowman says tomorrow’s Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Randwick should be Winx’s easiest task this Spring, but he did admit the pressure was mounting with each start.
Winx goes for win number 19 in a row and Bowman couldn’t find a reason why tomorrow’s event wouldn’t be her most comfortable this campaign.
“It possibly is (her easiest task). I can’t see anything coming out of the woodwork,” he said.
“Up until about 16th straight win, before the Queen Elizabeth, I didn’t think about it (winning streak) but there’s an expectation there and she’s expected to win.”
The much talked about gear change, with Winx to wear ear muffs after her disastrous start in the Warwick Stakes, won’t have much of an effect according to Bowman who said the champion mare has released some nervous energy since her first-up win.
“They could help but I’m not convinced they will. But they definitely won’t be to her detriment,” he said.
“It’s not something we’ve thought about for that long because everything’s gone so seamless for her far but Chris Waller is a perfectionist.
“She’s more relaxed this time than she was at the corresponding gallop before her first-up run so it’s a good sign.”
Trainer Chris Waller was as calm as Bowman after Thursday morning’s track gallop, saying the mare was 4kg lighter than she before the Warwick Stakes and has done everything right ahead of her second-up assignment.
“She just covers the ground so quickly so I guess the simple answer is that she is fast. What makes her fast? Well, her legs move faster than anything else,” Waller said.
“It’s been well documented that she doesn’t have a long, exuberant stride but just gets the job done and moves very quickly.
“We see that in her races from the 400m to the 200m mark, where she just has amazing acceleration.”
Winx jumps from barrier three, which Bowman said he had no concerns with in the field of 12.
