Godolphin pair set to fire in Gloaming

The Sportsman Weekend - - News - MATT JONES

GODOLPHIN looks to have a stranglehold on tomorrow’ s Group 3 $2 0 0,0 0 0 Gloaming Stakes (18 0 0m) with boom colts Astoria and Sanctioned.

The James Cummingstrained pair were the two punters wanted to back when markets opened on Wednesday morning with Astoria ($2.70) and Sanctioned ($3.90) heavily supported.

Medaglia d’Oro colt Astoria was ultraimpressive in winning the Spring Stakes (1600m) at Newcastle on September 15 after coming from last on the turn to mow down likes of Merovee and Primitivo.

Cummings expects further improvement ashes et shim on a course to the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000 m) at the end of Sydney’s spring carnival.

“He produced a rea l ly good, strong, surging win at Newcastle ,” Cummings said.

“He’s come through the run really well and he needs racing to keep bringing him on.

“When I looked him over on Tuesday morning, I was delighted with the way he appeared and I think he’s ready to produce again this weekend.

“He should be putting himself right into the race and he’s ready to attack the line .”

His other runner, Sanctioned, hasn’t won yet this preparation but his two runs have been impressive behind t he in-form Golden Rose-bound pair of Dracarys and Gold Standard.

He was strong to the line in the Group 3 Stan Fox Stakes behind Gold Standard and went past Addictive Nature easy enough in that race and has plenty of upside.

Cummings wants to see him lift again.

“I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself as far as spring targets go, but he’s nominated for the majors,” he said. “He started this preparation as a midweek winner and he’s now a Group 3 placegetter first-up a Group 2 placegetter last start, so he’s on an upward spiral.”

The pair will jump from favour abl en side gates in a race that could produce few surprises.

John Thompson’s Thy Kingdom Come was a slashing winner at Kembla Grange last start and will appreciate the extra 200 min distance.

Impressive Godolphin pair Astoria (pictured) and Sanctioned will be hard to beat in tomorrow’s Gloaming Stakes.
