Bowman confident Winx won’t falter in the Turnbull

C HAMPION mare Winx will celebrate 21 straight wins if she can beat the cream of Australia’s weight-for-age gallopers in tomorrow’s Group 1 VRC Turnbull Stakes (2000m).

It will be Winx’s first run and Flemington and only her fourth run in Melbourne.

CHAMPION jockey Hugh Bowman shrugged off suggest ions that Win x is past her best in the leadup to tomorrow’ s Group 1 Turn bull Stakes (2000m) at Fleming ton.

The champion mare, who is currently on a 20race winning streak go ing back to the autumn of 2015, has made fans nervous in all three runs back this preparation where her winning unlooked to be in danger on each occasion.

She had leg it i mate excuse sin her first two runs, but there was no reason she should have been struggling 800 m out last start in the George Ma in Stakes.

She ended up winning wellin the end, but not in the same dominant fashion she was blitzing her rivals in dur it he past two seasons.

Many feel rockhard tracks, which every horse is running time on, have brought her back to t he field a bit.

Bowman said she’s still the number one horse in the land.

“She’s the undisputed champion and I think she will certainly make her presence felt on Saturday ,” he said.

“I suppose now people are waiting for her to slide down the hill but I don’t thnk horse could have done more this preparation.

“I take it with a grain of salt. Everyone’ s got an opinion and she’s at a stage now where everyone’s waiting for her to start togo down.

“She hasn’t won with the dominance we’ve seen in the past but conditions have been the result of hat. They’ ve run really fast time si her past two and come home very fast .”

One punter certainly doesn’t think she’s past her best and has placed a $94,150 bet on her to win, fir ming her in from $1.20 to $1.15.

The last time Winx had a lead-up run in Melbourne prior to the Cox Plate she only had take on two in the Cau l field Stakes after scaring her other rivals off.

Tomorrow she’s only got to beat six rivals and only one looks like putting any pressure on her.

That’ s last-start winner Humidor.

Bowman acknowledged the threat of Humidor, who was brilliant in winning

Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on September 16.

T hat day he ran past Hart nell with ease, much the same as Winx has done a number of times in the past.

“He’s t he best horse she’s going to line up against for so met me so I certainly have a healthy respect him and I was very impressed with how he went last start ,” Bowman said.

Since a riving down south the champion mare has been galloped twice by Bowman who said she’s fitted in better than he expected.

“I’ve noticed at Rosehill she’s been a bit more wound up than usual but when at Flemington she certainly seems more relaxed and content because it’s not as busy so I think that’s a really good sign,” Bowman said.

“Is he’ ll enjoy Fleming ton. She’s reached the pinnacle and proven how good she is.”
