MUDGEE gelding Galaxy Warrior has been primed to peak in a race that shapes as his own personal Everest tomorrow at Royal Randwick.

The Gayna Williams-trained gelding will takes part in the inaugural ATC TAB Anniversary Highway (1400m) carrying a purse of $200,000.

“We have had the Anniversary Highway in our sights for quite a while and soon as it was announced, we have targeted him for this race,” Williams said.

“He’s got a bit of weight (60.5kgs) but he’s earned it and there are a few others in the same boat. He hasn’t drawn too badly in 11 and if the emergencies don’t get a run he’ll come out of 9 which is better than what he drew in the Final of the Country Championships (barrier 14).”

Galaxy Warrior goes into the Anniversary third-up after two outstanding runs, the first — his now commonplace barnstorming fourth at the Rosehill midweeks before a last start win at Dubbo where a leader-bias track meant that he was ridden much closer than normal but still got the job done with plenty of authority.

“I think he is a better horse sat in behind the leaders and let finish off. He needs to gain momentum to find the line,” Williams said.

“I don’t think he finishes off quite as well if he is ridden too close to the speed, Grant (Buckley) will work things out.”
