When qst re improved perf, trn std mare when racing over unsuitable dist fm wide barrier last start, made some ground in home straight but hung in & proved disap. Near 50m laid in and bumped with another runner. 2 MEMENTO 20/09/2017 Warwick Farm COT - Option to be ridden further forward; settled outside leader. Laid in over final 150m. 8 PUMPKIN PIE 30/09/2017 Royal Randwick For some distance leaving the 700m raced in restricted room. 9 COGLIERE 27/09/2017 Rosehill Gardens Slow to begin and then was steadied back in across runners shortly after the start. 11 SUNCRAZE 9/09/2017 Rosehill Gardens Slow to begin. Inclined to lay in in the middle stages and near the 700m became unbalanced when its rider corrected it to avoid making contact with the running rail. Over the final 100m laid in under pressure. 12 GENTLEMAN MAX 1/10/2017 Cootamundra A prerace veterinary examination of the gelding, which kicked out in barriers, found it suitable to race. Rider stated his mount began well and took up an advantageous position in behind the lead. He added he was able to shift out near the 600m and had an uninterrupted run to the line but his mount found line only fairly and in his opinion did not appreciate the firm track. For some distance in the early part of the straight was inclined to lay in, was reluctant to proceed into a narrow run between rnrs. 2 BIG DUKE (IRE) 30/09/2017 Royal Randwick COT - to be ridden more fwd; settled worse than midfield. Raced in restricted room shortly after the start. Steadied near the 2000m. 5 HAVANA COOLER (IRE) 30/09/2017 Royal Randwick After being fractious in the barriers was slow to begin. When being steadied from heels near the 2000m, and had to be checked when crowded for room when rnr ran in. 10 DOUKHAN (IRE) 2/10/2017 Warwick Farm When qd re dis perf, rdr std that as was not content with slow pace near 1200m, elected rather than being awk on heels to shift out & take up lead near 1000m. Said trav reasonable for 200m, but then came under pressure & app 600m despite attempts, began to weaken. Post race vets rev poor post-race rec. Trn advised geld dropping back dist may not have suited by advancing at 1200m & in view is better suited when ridden with cover. Trn since reported was satisfied with post race cond of gelding. Race 7: 5 KURO (NZ) 30/09/2017 Royal Randwick On straightening shifted out and was steadied to avoid heels. 6 THE MONSTAR 30/09/2017 Royal Randwick Became fractious in the barrier, lunged forward & struck its head. Acting on veterinary advice, gelding was a late withdrawal. 9 KAEPERNICK 2/10/2017 Warwick Farm Slow to begin. Near the 900m, when inclined to overrace, had to be steadied avoid heels. Race 9: 2 SENSE OF OCCASION 30/09/2017 Royal Randwick Rdr std geld travelled well in run, but when tempo increased from 700m mount became immediately under pressure & from that point was one-paced to the finish. Could offer no real excuse for gelding’s disappointing performance. Post-race vet exam did not reveal any abs. Trnr advised had pleased leading into race & undertook to report back on the progress of the gelding subsequent to the race. 6 MCCREERY (GB) 30/09/2017 Royal Randwick After being slow begin was crowded shortly after. 7 MACKINTOSH (NZ) 30/09/2017 Royal Randwick When qst, rdr std mount travelled well outside leader. Said when tempo increased app 600m mount commenced to hang in. Added in straight became worse & was obliged to stop riding in order to straighten mount & was unable to ride using normal vigour. Post-race vet exam rev a poor post-race recovery & signs of thumps. Said was of the opinion geld was suffering effects of testing run. Indicated would experiment with Norton bit & ear muffs.
