THE EARLY CROW

The Sportsman Weekend - - Flemington Preview -

THE BANKER

Fastnet Tempest (Race 2) looks one of the safer bets on the day and most people will anchor him in early multiples. Should have gone close to

winning the Sale Cup last start as he was laying in behind the winner down the straight. Looks ideally suited by

big track here and doesn’t strike an overly strong field. He’ll take beating.

THE LAY

Bookies are likely to take risks with Qewy (Race 5) despite his powerful win in the Bendigo Cup last start. He has 59kg, has to cross from the wide

barrier and faces a line-up chockful of talented in-form stayers. Punters who like him are likely to get better than the current $3.60 on offer.

AT THE TRIALS

Payroll (Race 6) has been given just over a month off since her last start effort when a closing third to Now Or Later at Flemington. She has since gone to the trials at Cranbourne and couldn’t have been more impressive

in winning by a big space under a pretty good hold. She jumps to the 2000m tomorrow but that shouldn’t worry her. Big threat.

SECTIONAL STAR

In the same race as Payroll, Heavens Above (Race 6) caught the eye with her closing effort to finish eighth to Shoals in the Myer Classic last Saturday. Clocked the second best last 400m and 200m of the race and on a track where it was difficult to

make up a lot of ground. She’ll go well to the 2000m.

THE STATS SPEAK

Lord Aspen (Race 4) has found a race to suit tomorrow. He’s had six tries at the trip for three wins and two placings, has had four tries at the Flemington 1400m for two wins and a third and has notched eight of his nine wins on a firm surface, which he’s likely to get again tomorrow. Rates a big chance.
