The Sportsman Weekend - - The Trackwork Winners - TIM PAYNE

TRAINER Matthew Smith almost caused a massive upset when his galloper INVICTUS PRINCE finished second to Winx at huge odds two runs back but he has always shown that there was a good race in him.

He has had run since that day, which was fair and on Tuesday morning he worked on the Course Proper over 1200m in 1.19.76, his final 400m in 23.23, the last 200m in 11.15 and never got out of second gear.

He runs in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap at Royal Randwick tomorrow and should not be taken lightly.

PIERATA runs in the same race and he put in a brave performance last start when he travelled wide the journey only to go down narrowly in the Tramway Stakes.

He has thrived in his work since and on Tuesday morning, he galloped strongly on the Course Proper over 1000m in 1.04.1 with his final 400m in 22.98 and last 200m 11.2. He too was never off the bridle.

Trainer Greg Hickman has brought him to his peak and he is going to look the winner at some stage of the race tomorrow.

BRIGHT RUBICK, a daughter of new season sire Rubick, looked to run on well in heat two at the official two-yearold trials the Kensington track last Monday and she looks a promising type.

Last Saturday, she galloped solo on the A Grass over 800m in 54.03 with her final 400m in 24.8 and last 200m in 11.72 hitting the line strongly under a tight grip.

Bjorn Baker has a good opinion of this filly and she will run boldly in the Gimcrack Stakes tomorrow.

LIGULATE from the James Cummings stable looked a little disappointing at his last start when unplaced over 1300m at Kembla Grange Tuesday but he has come through the run in good shape and worked strongly Tuesday morning.

Galloping solo over 1200m on the Course Proper, he recorded 1.24.42 for the trip with a final 400m in 23.32 and last 200m in 11.09.

He steps up to 1600m tomorrow and if he runs up to his work, will be hard beat in race three.

Mark Newnham reported that his exciting two-year-old EXCEED THE STARS, winner of both trials, did a nice piece of work on the Course Proper Monday morning and pulled up extremely well.

He runs in the Breeders’ Plate tomorrow and will go close to winning.
