Newnham ‘couldn’t be happier’ with his Glamorous grey
SYDNEY trainer Mark Newnham is looking forward to exciting filly Greysful Glamour stepping up the 2000m for the first time in tomorrow’s Group 3 Ethereal Stakes at Caulfield as her final lead-up to next month’s Group 1 Kennedy Oaks.
The grey daughter of Stratum was a dominant winner of the Kennedy Oaks Trial at Flemington last start where she cruised to a three and a quarter length win.
“She was fantastic in winning the Oaks trial,” Newnham said. “I think she just appreciated the step up to 1800m and I’m sure going to 2000m tomorrow will be more advantageous to her.
“If I have one query, it’s that Sydney horses having their first run at Caulfield can find the track a little tricky but with her racing manners and racing style, I wouldn’t think it’s going to be a problem.
“She had a start in that direction and did it well so I’m happy enough her. She’s prepared well, I can’t knock her preparation. couldn’t have any better so it’s up to now.”
Greysful Glamour tuned up for tomorrow’s assignment with a strong barrier trial on her home track last week and topped off her preparation with a strong workout on Tuesday morning.
“I couldn’t be happier with her,” he said. “I feel that was the best she has ever trialled last week and I was really pleased with her gallop on Tuesday morning.
“I would be disappointed if she wasn’t right in the finish tomorrow.”
While the longer distances, especially the 2500m of the Oaks, are a query for the three-year-olds in spring, Newnham believes Greysful Glamour has the right temperament, breeding and has had the right grounding to excel.
“I think for these early three-year-olds, getting to the 2500m trip of the Oaks is pretty testing,” he said.
“The thing she has in her favour, and I think you will find with most of the Oaks winners, is that they have had a solid two-year-old preparation. I think it just toughens them up to get that trip.
“They have got race experience and a little bit of toughness under their belt compared to filly trying to get there in her first preparation.”
“From the time she came in this preparation, the Oaks has been her aim.”
“Her pedigree and temperament gives me confidence she will run it (2500m) and run it out well.”
“She’s prepared well, I can’t knock her preparation. I couldn’t have her any better so it’s up to her now.” MARK NEWNHAM
