The square

The Sunday Mail (Queensland) - Escape - - CRUISE RUSSIA -

The main square, known as Five Corners Square, is the central hub, near a statue of Lenin and another statue of a 17-year-old who blew himself up with a grenade rather than be captured by Nazis. The war history in Murmansk remains very close to the surface – it was supposed to be captured by the Nazis within days during 1941, but held out as a vital haven for Allied convoys and a railhead, despite being heavily bombed. The city has since been designated a Russian Hero City’’ and the pride of the past runs deep.
