Cellars with style
Brian Johnston explores wineries with a difference in Mudgee
garnacha, graciano and gran tinto before heading out to the lawns for a game of croquet, badminton or giant Jenga. At adjacent Baker Williams Distillery, have a change from wine by trying some of its vodka, coffee and cumquat liqueurs or utterly seductive butterscotch schnapps.
Fabulous winemaker’s table events, hosted by owner David Lowe, comprise a leisurely nine courses and 16 matching wines. Start with barbecued garfish and aioli matched with riesling, move on to pork belly salad with an interesting zinfandel, and eventually finish (if you have space) with a muscat accompanied by fruit cookies.
